American Expedition Yachts (AEY) has started construction of the new NW 42 fast trawler. It was designed to cruise at 8-10 knots, and for those times when you might want it, you have the potential to push the throttle wide open for a 14 knot top end and 16 knots with the optional engine upgrade. The NW42 is built for coastal cruising and has the robust look of a serious trawler: high bow, proper amount of hull flair, reverse pilothouse windows, well conceived layout and high-end equipment. The hull has been extensively tank tested. The wide keel lets the engine sit inside, allowing more room to work over the engine, lowers the CG, and increases the stability. These boats are built with safety and reliability in mind and can be equipped with stabilizers for those that want to travel off the coastline. The NW42 is the first of a series of fast trawlers developed in a joint venture between AEY and Northwest Yachts that will include a NW52 and NW62 versions. AEY designed the yachts using 3-dimensional software so that each cabinet door, plumbing run, and bulkhead has been modeled and is ready for assembly. In many cases, the drawing will be sent directly to the 5-axis CNC machines to be cut and ready for final installation. AEY launched the first NW 42 in the summer 2007 and is in full production. The first boat completed a trip down the West coast to San Deigo and then to La Paz in the 2007 FUBAR Pacific rally. The NW 42 can be modified for those that want to add some of their own touches.
